Skin Conditions

Often occurring in children but not uncommon in adults, eczema typically manifests as a dry, itchy, red patch which often cracks. These patches worsen when the sufferer is stressed causing 'flare-ups'. It is not really known why people suffer with eczema, though it seems closely linked to those suffering with allergies.

Treatments for eczema range from quite powerful topical steroid creams to more simple solutions that provide relief from the itchiness.

Natural treatments include Ditch That Itch, or Soothe Your Skin. These 100% natural preparations relieve the itchiness and reduce the redness associated with eczema.

Dry skin, also known as xerosis, is caused by either pathological or physiological conditions.

Physiological dryness can occur in the elderly - as the skin ages, the cell turnover is slower and can cause dryness. In women, the menopause has been shown to cause skin dryness too. Other reasons include exposure to the sun and bathing too often. Soap, bubble baths and shower products can also dry out the skin.

Pathological reasons for dry skin is a long list but includes anaemia, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Treatments for dry skin usually involve applying Emollients (creams with a lipid, or fat) frequently. Healthy Step stocks a range of high quality emollients - the Gehwol range of creams are used by healthcare professionals and are well established as a reliable brand.

Psoriasis results in the skin having red, flaky, crusty patches covered in silvery scales. It usually occurs on elbows, knees and the back but can appear anywhere on the body.

Psoriasis affects about 2% of the UK population and ranges from a minor irritation in some people, to a major debilitating condition for others. It is not fully understood why psoriasis occurs though it can run in families and often starts after a trigger event such as the death of a close family member or some other medical event for example a serious throat infection.

There is no cure for psoriasis, but there are preparations that can help alleviate the itchiness often associated with it. Soothe your Skin, as the name suggests, is a soothing products that can help in psoriasis. Another product that can help is the Gehwol Lipidro cream .
